Nigeria as a multilingual nation has over 515 languages. Out of these languages, 505 are still living indigenous languages, 8 are extinct while 2 are second languages (Grimes 2000:166). Apart from the three major languages, Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo, majority of the minority languages are endangered, largely due to lack of use, especially as they have no orthographies. There is an urgent need for many of these languages to be reduced to writing, so that they can be both properly used and avoid getting moribund and extinct. This book, An Introduction to Phonemic Analysis, provides anyone interested in a hitherto unwritten language the techniques to write it.

The Preface
Leggbo Lexicon grew out of a wonderful year-long experience I had in the University of California at Berkeley from September 1st 2001 to July 30th 2002. I worked as a linguistic consultant in a field method's course on Leggbo language, ably coordinated by Professor Larry Hyman. Doing vocabulary work during that period, kept me sane in the heat of September 11, 2001, and its aftermath.

This is a sketch and a very preliminary investigation into some aspects of Leggbo phonology, a Lower Cross language spoken by about 60,000 speakers in the Abi Local Government Area of the Cross River State of Nigeria. It covers the segments and prosodies, and it shows an interesting interaction between them, which manifests in the interface between phonology, morphology and syntax. Of particular note is the contrast between lenition and tortition which has both a high grammatical and lexical function. This prosodic contrast leads to fortis and lenis consonant sets. Also included in the book is a lexicon of 1,532 Leggbo words. This descriptive work will be of interest and bene?t to a variety of readers, including the native speakers, undergraduates, graduate students, linguists and other researchers.

About The Book
This book is actually a tangential body filling review of aspects of the author's Ph.D Dissertation. lts primary aim is to provide a description of some basic aspects of Anaang Phonology, given the paucity of research materials in the language. The description covers both the segments, the non segments and some phonological processes. A thorough knowledge of the different variations of Generative Theory, particularly the non-linear analyses of both the Autosegmental and Metrical Phonologies, is assumed. The description of the Anaang Phonology is done within these frameworks. The materials herein are exceedingly essential for the university student and researcher, not only in Anaang language, but also of Phonology in general.
